In North Africa, the dog is considered the main reservoir of Echinococcus granulosus infestation for domestic livestock (intermediate hosts) and for humans. In Algeria, there is very little data on the infestation rate of dogs, whereas the prevalence of E. granulosus in the definitive host is a very reliable benchmark of the potential risk of transmission of cystic echinococcosis to Man and cattle.
